For people who love to “do-it-yourself” a move is just another learning experience. However moving to a new location takes organizational skills in order to avoid the most common pitfalls of moving. Here are a few helpful tips for DIY movers. If you are a born procrastinator like me, then moving will be a big headache. A DIY move is a bad event to slack off. Packing, sorting and organizing takes a lot of time, so if you tend to leave everything to the last minute, moving will be a hassle. In my opinion a successful DIY move just takes 3 things: a checklist, a floor plan of the new place and lots of time. If you don’t have the last part then a DIY move can still be successful even with just the first two. As soon as you find out you are going to move, create a checklist of all the things you need to accomplish. Include mundane everyday things like going to the cleaners (you might have some long forgotten items there), buying gas (once there you will remember to have the car tuned up for the drive to the new place), grocery shopping (include boxes and packaging materials). Everyday stuff that you do can be reminders of errands that need just a little bit of tweaking. A floor plan will be a god sent when you arrive at your new location. Everything that is unpacked will have a proper place. This avoids confusion and will make your move faster and more efficient. Time is the best friend of movers . This gives you a lot of time to sort, organize and plan for the big day. So if you have lots of time, start on that checklist and floor plan. Pack and have an inventory of every box you pack. Before handing in the keys of the old place, don’t forget to look at every nook and cranny, you might have forgotten to pack something.
